How to find your SMTP settings for Proton Mail
This article covers where to find each value you'll need for the SMTP tab in your Vendor Profile (see How to add/update your SMTP settings if you haven't already found that screen).
Before you start: check your plan
Proton Mail's SMTP sending feature ("SMTP Submission") is only available on paid Proton Mail plans with a custom domain address - this includes Proton for Business plans, and Visionary or Family plans that have a custom domain set up.
It is not available:
- On free Proton Mail accounts
- On default
@proton.meor@protonmail.comaddresses without a custom domain attached
If your brand is on a free plan or doesn't have a custom domain configured, Proton Mail can't be used for SMTP sending in Trove - you'll need to either upgrade the Proton Mail plan and add a custom domain, or use a different email provider for this integration.
The values you'll need
| Field | Value |
|---|---|
| SMTP Host | smtp.protonmail.ch |
| SMTP Port | 587 |
| Encryption | STARTTLS (if your only options are "SSL/TLS" or "TLS," choose TLS) |
| Username | Your custom domain email address (the one the token below is generated for) |
| Password | A generated SMTP token - not your regular Proton Mail password |
| From name / From email | Whatever you'd like emails to display as |
Generating your SMTP token
- Sign in to Proton Mail in your browser and go to Settings → All settings → IMAP/SMTP → SMTP tokens.
- Click Generate token.
- Give the token a name you'll recognise later (e.g. "Trove SMTP") and select the custom domain address it's for.
- Click Generate, then confirm with your Proton Mail account password.
- Copy the SMTP username and token shown - this token is only displayed once, so copy it before closing the popup.

Common gotcha
Your regular Proton Mail login or mailbox password will never work for SMTP - Proton explicitly requires the separate generated token for any third-party app or integration. If authentication is failing, the most likely cause is that the account password has been entered instead of the token.
