Editing a Synced Product in Trove - What Survives a Re-Sync
The short answer
If you edit a Shopify-synced product directly in Trove, and that same field also exists in Shopify, your Trove edit will be overwritten the next time that product syncs - whether that's the automatic sync (triggered by any update to the product in Shopify) or a manual "Sync Products" run.
There is currently no "keep my Trove edit" option for these fields. Trove does not merge your changes with Shopify's - it replaces the field with whatever the latest Shopify value is.
Worked example
- A product pulls through from Shopify. You'd like the description shown in Trove to read slightly differently than the one in Shopify, so you edit the description directly in Trove.
- A week later, you click Sync Products to refresh your catalog (or you simply update the product's price in Shopify, which fires an automatic sync).
- Result: your custom description is replaced with the current Shopify description. Your edit is gone - the sync doesn't know it was intentional, it just applies the latest Shopify value due to the data in Shopify treated as the "single source of truth".
This applies to any field that Shopify supplies, including:
- Title
- Description
- Price
- SKU
- Stock/quantity
- Images (the entire image gallery is rebuilt from Shopify on every sync - any images you added or reordered in Trove that aren't in Shopify are removed)
- Variants and options
- Category assignment, with one exception noted below
The one exception: categories
Category behavior differs slightly depending on which sync ran:
- Manual "Sync Products": only ever adds categories from Shopify - it never removes a category you've assigned manually in Trove. Manually-added categories are safe from this sync path.
- Automatic (webhook) sync: when a product update comes through from Shopify, Trove resets that product's categories to match Shopify's category data before re-adding them. A category you assigned manually in Trove can be cleared the next time that specific product is edited in Shopify.
In short: a manual full sync won't touch your extra categories, but an automatic sync triggered by editing that product in Shopify might reset them. If category organization in Trove matters to you, treat it the same as any other field - expect it to be overwritten if the product changes on the Shopify side.
The one field that's protected
Reclassifying a product's type in Trove - for example, setting it as an Add-on - is preserved through both sync types. This is currently the only Trove-side edit that survives a re-sync.
Recommendation
If you want a product's title, description, images, or other synced fields to differ from what's in Shopify long-term, make that change in Shopify itself rather than in Trove, since Trove will always be brought back in line with Shopify's data on the next sync. Trove-only edits to synced fields should be treated as temporary - they will not survive the next automatic or manual sync of that product.
